Destination Trails won the bid to implement a reroute of the famous Heysen Trail as well as to design and construct a Spur Trail to one of the New High End Campsites in Deep Creek Conservation Park. As well as upgrading the Heysen Trail, this project was a small part of a larger “rebranding” of the Heysen Trail along the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula as a bite site, marketable, 4 day sample of the trail called the “Wild South Coast Way”. Destination Trails designed a new spur trail to modern criteria and to help “naturalise’ the new campsites required landscaping, dry stone walling and surfaced trails, to ensure the highest quality visitor experiences at the new campsites and along the new sections of trail.
It has been a lovely week at Newland Head Conservation Park.
Destination Trails was tasked with creating a link from the Heysen Trail to the brand new high end camping site, through coastal vegetation and a sand dune ecosystem. We suggested using the endemic mulch that has been generated by fire break maintenance to surface the trail and allow tired walkers a break from the soft sands. We also added some rock steps to welcome walkers in off the Heysen! Worked out pretty good!
Credit to @nationalparkssa for making these fun new ideas work! The new campsites are very plush!
