Destination Trails were commissioned by the Project Manager to re-open and re-shape a selection of trails after the bushfires of late 2019. The fire destroyed the pine plantations and caused a hot burn of native forest areas. Trail recovery was divided amongst a number of professional trail contractors and local mountain bike (MTB) clubs.
Note trails built with strict adherence to the IMBA Trail Design Principles survived the intense fires and subsequent heavy summer rainfalls extremely well. A good re-shape with key learnings from the early days of IMBA guided trails in Australia and some modern high speed flow enhancements for the revitalised descents. All large dangerous trees in the trail corridor were felled and placed at a safe distance from the trail.
Destination Trails was lucky enough to be asked to rework trails that Director Nick Bowman had designed and constructed in previous roles. Namely, the following trails:
Just got the latest #humanprojectilesmtbclub jersey in the post this week, celebrating 30 years of riding! It could be the best yet! Comfy too. There areca lot of tricky little graphics built into this 1. All the old fire tracks we used to ride are listed with club nick names and fox creek contours in the background. Looks like the Duck might be holding up a replica of thr new Fox Creek Bike Park logo. Hmmmm..... what else?
It is an honour to wear these colours. These folls are still riding every Thursday arvo and they just got back from their annual tour. Ride on!
Destination Trails has been based at Fox Farm (accommodation) the last few weeks. It has been rad to be staying here right next to @foxcreekbikepark ..... thanks to our generous hosts!
Definitely the place for groups planning to lock in accommodation for trail weekends at Fox Creek Bike Park. Close to the local winery / brewery / distillery options of the Adelaide Hills too.
Now we have some silt logs in place to slow down surface water, it might not rain for 6 months. 🙄 But if we do get any summer storms, this should cover it.
My personal attachment to this trail is pretty deep so it was a real privilege to help clean it up after the fires. The way surface water is running across the hills now there is very little canopy, leaf litter or top soil has been a challenge. It forced the team and I to step it up to go beyond standard trail works. Most of it is working really well although we still have a few bits and pieces to adjust this Summer but it`s open so get on it!
Big thanks to the Human Projectiles for their contribution and the solid tree services of @weedkilla_21 .... couldn`t have done it without you guys.
Thanks for the patience of the management @foxcreekbikepark and @forestrysa as we grappled with the varied components of this rebuild.
